Heartbreaker at the Finish: Atlantis Falls to Miami Dade on Final Play
Atlantis University dropped a tough 9-8 decision to the Miami Dade Sharks on Tuesday, with the game ending on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth at Bamboo Drive. Locked at eight apiece, Miami Dade executed in the final moment as Areziaga’s fly ball brought home the winning run.
Atlantis delivered a strong offensive performance, tallying 13 hits, but couldn't overcome Miami Dade's disciplined approach at the plate and late-game execution. Miami Dade struck first in the opening inning, capitalizing on a single from Mendez and a walk by Suarez to take a 2-0 lead. Atlantis responded immediately in the second, jumping ahead 4-2 behind RBI singles from Knowles Jr. and Lopez, each driving in two runs.
Ruiz extended the lead in the third with a solo home run to left, but Miami Dade clawed back, tying the game in the fourth through patience at the plate, drawing a walk, and taking advantage of a hit-by-pitch. The Sharks regained control in the fifth, using a combination of a Garcia double, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly to move ahead.
Atlantis refused to fold, and in the top of the ninth, Astudillo delivered a clutch double to center field, driving in runs to even the score at eight. On the mound, Brito opened for Atlantis, while Encarnacion was tagged with the loss in relief. Miami-Dade starter Grazzal allowed early damage but was backed by timely pitching down the stretch.
Offensively, Atlantis was led by Valbuena's perfect 4-for-4 performance, while Astudillo paced the lineup with three RBIs. Offerill added a multi-hit effort as the Atlanteans consistently applied pressure. Miami Dade, despite recording just five hits, capitalized on 15 walks and aggressive base running, swiping seven bases to keep Atlantis on its heels throughout the contest. Atlantis also turned a double play defensively, but Miami Dade's three double plays proved critical in limiting further damage. A tightly contested battle from start to finish ultimately came down to execution in the final at-bat, with Atlantis ending on the wrong side of a one-run game.
